Carthamus tinctorius.  This old heirloom plant is well known for its rich oil and its medicinal purposes.  Fiery thistle-like flowers shine yellow, orange and red.  Plants grow 2-3' tall, are easy to grow and tolerate dry conditions.

Start indoors 8 weeks before last Spring frost, or sow directly in garden, once soil temperature is above 10ºC. Plant seeds 1" deep, 6" apart. Seedlings emerge in 7-21 days. Transplant to garden after danger of last frost has passed.
