Symphytum Officinale.  This hardy, deep-rooted herb has large, nutrient-rich leaves and blooms from late spring through fall with clusters of small, bell-shaped purple-pink flowers that attract pollinators. Its bushy growth makes it ideal for permaculture gardens, enriching soil, attracting beneficial insects, and providing excellent material for compost. Traditionally, comfrey has been used in herbal medicine as a topical treatment to speed up healing of skin wounds, bruises, and inflammation from joint pain and muscle soreness.

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, planting 1/2" deep. Transplant after frost, spacing 24-48" apart. Alternatively, direct sow outdoors 3 weeks before the last frost. Keep soil moist; germination takes 2-3 weeks. This fast-growing perennial quickly fills space.
